Dog-friendly Auckland cafés

Posted by <<Expired>>

We've scoured the raves on Localist to find local cafés where dogs are welcome. If you find the situation different, let us know below.

Orvieto Café
This Mt Eden breakfasty legend is loved not only for their colourful artwork, famous french toast and tasty hashbrowns – Orvieto has a well-deserved reputation as a dog-friendly destination. Localists LJH and Spicezoe love the outdoor seating and water bowls provided for dogs. It’s also right on the doorstep of one of Auckland’s best off-the-leash dog parks, Big King Reserve.

Sausalito Café
Sausalito Café in Northcote Point isn’t just the regular haunt of cinema goers (it’s right next to Bridgeway Cinema) – it’s also popular with the canine crowd. North Auckland Localist Meg says that Sausolito is “a favourite with the well heeled locals and their dogs, who often order biscotti for the pooches to dine on”. They also serve a mean breakfast.

Vinyl Coffee Shop
This retro delight on Dominion Road apparently has coffee AMAZING enough to inspire caps (thanks for the great rave, Mandamonium) and their breakfast burrito is legendary. Woofers are welcome, not surprising considering the laid-back vibe.

Bask Café
Bask Café in Browns Bay has a relaxed atmosphere, a great lunch menu and is both child and dog friendly. To quote Localist J_Akld_NZ’s rave: “It's nice to sit outside here on a sunny day. You can take your dog too (well outside anyway). They have a water bowl and have been known to give out a few dog treats too!” It’s right on the beach, making it a great spot to grab a snack with rover after a romp in the waves.

Sebastian's Boutique Café
It’s easy to see why this small boutique café in Orakei won Metro’s Best Local café 2005 award – they’ve got it perfect, from the top-notch food to excellent customer service. Easyfoodhacks recommends their buttermilk hotcakes served with citrus mascapone and plum compote (yum!) and also points out that they are dog friendly, with water bowls and a pole to leash your dog to.

Alphabet Bistro Café
The owner of this café is very dog friendly, making this a lovely spot to have a scone and tea after a stroll with your pooch through the Parnell rose gardens.

Bloom Café
This lovely little café is a real hidden gem, tucked away in Eden Garden on the slopes of Mt Eden. Take a wander through 5.5 acres of flower-filled gardens, followed by a cup of tea (served with style in a china teapot and delicate bone china cups). They are pet friendly, so it’s a fun day out for the whole family.

Garnet Station
With its plush decor and sweet treats, this quirky vintage shop in Westmere is all about creature comforts, for all creatures – including your pooch. They offer water for dogs, and are also child friendly.

Benson Road Deli
Central and Island’s Localist CharlieHaycock shared her Sunday morning ritual with us: munching on bacon and eggs at BRD reading the Sunday paper, patting the dog and watching “the delightful characters of Remuera flitter past”. Sounds good!

Moreton's
Ok, so Moreton’s isn’t really a café – it’s more of a restaurant/bar. This pet-friendly St Heliers beachfront beauty is a popular summer hangout, with a fantastic wine list, excellent meals (try the seafood platter) and stunning views of the harbour and Rangitoto Island.
