Recently, Localist sent secret reviewers to bars around Auckland. Our mission: to uncover the best local bars - by the people, for the people.
We were looking for great service, superb ambience, friendly staff - even the bathroom came under the microscope. The result is a go-to shopping list of bars from the four corners of Auckland that are worth driving across town for.
@jenn.mckenzie says, "I'm not sure what I was expecting at The Wine Cellar but I definitely didn't expect the place I visited. This bar is tucked away off K Road and links down to Myers Park and blink and you would miss it. It's a small, dark little bar (although has an awesome outdoor bit) but is pretty awesome. We felt a little out of place in our business attire (especially when everyone was very hip) but the bartender made us instantly feel welcome..." Read more
@J_Akld_NZ says, "Although the name suggest it's a Bar, make sure you go prepared to eat... there's no way you can look past the yummy tapas menu! The only thing that I didn't like about Mondial, was that they didn't give you a menu, it's written across the wall. So if you've got you're facing the bar you're going to have to rely on others to let you know what looks good. There is also some on the mirror, which in the dark light is really hard to see. Don't get me wrong though... I love this place!..." Read more
@Lorraine says, "It's one of those bars you can walk right past and yet it's always busy. We managed to find a possie inside which is rare on a cold night. The boyf was feeling sick so didn't feel like booze and when he asked the bartender (Hannan) for a tomato juice, he reacted a if he's been waiting all week for someone to give him that opportunity. He recommended a virgin mary and got stuck in making the best version I have ever tasted..." Read more
@missnoma says, "I have raved about Lucha in the past. It's one of those places that punches above its weight, and it keeps calling me back. Relaxed, efficient, capable and comfortable. Newmarket's best kept secret. The soundtrack alone is enough to keep you there all night - Blondie, Patti Smith, Florence, Rolling Stones, Tegan and Sara... To quench our thirst we took to the bar menu. A tantalising array of cocktails with names that evoke the spirit of rock'n'roll Mexico at its best - The Daywalker, Crimson and Clover, Some Weird Sin, Trick Pony... " Read more
@Rebecca says, "We went to Everybodys on Saturday evening and expected it to be busy. We were told there would be an hour wait for a table which was expected so were sat at a table. My husband had a espresso martini which wasnt on the drinks men but should have been as it was incredible ($18). We ordered the mussles and the the beans which were both fabulous (and we could have easily ordered seconds) they were both generous portions and cheap at $8 each (both 10/10)..." Read more
