Love getting to Dress-smart to get a dress on sale at Marcs, deal on Sportsgear from Nike, discounted skin products from Life Pharmacy with a grab of quick lunch at the best Sushi around.  And you never know what else might catch my eye at a bargain price! All you need at DressSmart Outlet Mall at great prices. Recommend.

Where to find second hand treasure

    Real Groovy Auckland

I visit Real Groovy at least once a month. It's probably my favourite shopping experience in Auckland.

I'm mad for second-hand shopping and Paper Bag Princess always has lots of hidden gems, lots of stock and a high turn-over so you know that there will be all new delights next time you visit. Everything in store is less than $20 so you can't go wrong really. Plus if you have a b-card there is a 10% discount on their already low prices.

    Jason Books
    Auckland Central
Not your average second hand book shop, the emphasis here is on quality, you won't find Mills & Boon on these shelves! Beautiful hard wood floors make you feel like you're exploring a beautiful old library. Come here to find those rare, special and collectable books.

Warning! You can literally waste hours here! I know because I've done it. This is basically a warehouse full of used clothing, most of it is between $5-$15, and generally in really good condition. Bargain-hunter paradise.

The best outlet stores

I may look like I buy expensive jeans, but I’ll let you in on a little secret – I buy all of my denim from the Lee Outlet Store. So technically yes there is an expensive pair of jeans hugging my thighs but I certainly didn’t pay half as much as what they retail for. Check them out next time you are searching for that cut from a couple of seasons ago that became your favourite just as they pulled them off the racks. Cry no more – you’ll even be able to afford two pairs instead of one. Winning!

Shoes. That’s all I can say, so many shoes. Have really big feet and find it hard to track down a pair of skate shoes? Look no further. Have really little feet and you are forced to shop in the kid’s section? Look no further. As well as a sweet selection of tee’s, this shop will become your new summer time outlet store. Those sunny days are so close I can taste the sunscreen.

Well what more can I say about the Bendon Outlet store then it’s the only place to go when you need a little bit more va va voom in your life. The key to feeling sexy is to start with sexy lingerie, my favourite has always been the Elle Macpherson Intimates range , the only problem is when you are a student it’s a little hard to justify $100 on a bra. This is where you need to play your cards right and head along to the Bendon Outlet – even students need to feel sexy as they are slaving away over that assignment due tomorrow morning.

Why go to just one outlet when you can go to a mall full of them? Before you head to you local Westfield and fill your wardrobe with new season gear, head over to Dressmart and check out last season’s treasures and rock bottom prices. This is the perfect place to shop when you are heading overseas to a wintery wonderland and all of the kiwi shops are stocking bikinis and jandals.

Looking for an outlet store over the shore? If you haven’t been to the Fox Outlet Centre before, make sure to put it on your list of things to do. One of my main reasons to get off the motorway at Northcote is to make a stop by the Pack & Pedal outlet. With up to 70% off it’s the perfect place to spend that money your nana slipped into her annual five page Christmas letter.

The Hard to Find Book Shop in Onehunga is my favourite book store in the world. Crammed into the small space is a labrynth of sections spanning from classics to the occult and everything in between. Here you’ll find many treasures and curiosies that will excite even the most jaded of book buyers! If you love books, this is your place.

Conch Records is one of Auckland’s best spots to pick through popular and rare vinyl. It’s also got a great collection of clothes, collectible toys and they make a dam good coffee. Their backyard has recently been opened as Boteco, a South American eatery, that’s on my list to try.

I really like magazines. There’s something about there glossy pages, exciting content and somewhat throwaway nature that enthralls me. Mag Nation has an extensive range of magazines, from fashion, culture, woman’s interests to cars and hunting they have it all. Keep a look out for air freighted volumes as the shop gets a bunch of products not found elsewhere in Auckland. I’m also a sucker for Moleskin notepads which they stock in abundance!

    Tessuti
    Herne Bay
If you’re looking to treat your mum to something a little bit luxurious this uear then look no further than Ingrid Starnes and Tessuti in Herne Bay. The shop, which is a collaborative store has a great selection of NZ made jewellerry, quirky homeware qnd high end New Zealand made women’s fashion. Go on, treat Mum, she deserves it.

Whenever I need to buy a gift and am feeling a little stumped on the matter I head to Iko Iko. It's here in this haven of brightly colored plastic and painted wood surfaces I know that inspiration will strike. The shop, which has been there for as long as I can remember, stocks a great selection of quirky items. If you want a novely gift, a unique piece of jewellery or an eye catching coffee table book they have you covered with options to spare. It's not just for buying gifts either, feel free to treat yourself.

Good places to start the summer wardrobe

    Miss Crabb
    Ponsonby
I love designer Kristine Crabb of Miss Crabb fame for both her amazing personal style and her killer use of colour. You will always get a kick out of browsing her rainbow hued racks, and most likely leave with a beautiful new addition to your wardrobe that isn’t black! The store also stocks some of my other favourite labels, including the uniquely classic Penny Sage and Curio Noir candles.

    Kathryn Wilson Britomart
    Auckland Central
The Kathryn Wilson store at Britomart is the flagship store of the local shoe designer of the same name, and the perfect place to view her beautiful collections in their entirety . The staff are amazingly friendly and the shoes are to die for, making it a must visit when you’re in the downtown district. Try and leave with just one pair, I dare you.

When I go on the hunt for ‘that’ dress or ‘those’ pants (the females out there will know what I mean) one of the first places I look is TK Store on Brown Street. They constantly have new drops coming in of beautiful basics in unique fabrics and super flattering cuts, and their selection of imports is always gorgeous too. Oh, and they have some of the friendliest and most patient retail staff in town - bonus!

    Tessuti
    Herne Bay
One of my favourite homewares and gift stores in Auckland is Tessuti on Jervois Road. They stock all of the beautiful brands that I wish my home was filled with, including Missoni Home, Vida Stonewashed Linen and Herve Gambs. They also share their space with the wondrous Ingrid Starnes, so you can stock up on frocks whilst shopping for gifts. An amazing collaboration.

The huge Bendon store on Broadway in Newmarket is my favourite place to shop for lingerie by far. The selection is vast and the retail staff go above and beyond, and the changing rooms must be amongst the most spacious and glamorous in town. As well as the Bendon brands they stock a good selection of tights and shapewear too, so you’re all set for a night out.

Where to get that unique and obscure object you didn't know you needed

  1. 1
    2
Weekend Trader is one of the new kids in the Ponsonby Central and further enhances the homewares side of the complex. It has an industrial flavour and they specialise in vintage style lighting, stocking a wide variety of pendant lights and metal lampshades. They also have the ever popular terrarium in attractive geometric cases, reindeer hides, framed vintage motorcycle prints, large glass fronted cabinets, rustic sideboards and much more.

    3
    Aunty Mavis

Aunty Mavis is a must visit for those looking for Crown Lynn, NZ kitsch and kitchenalia. The shop will remind you of your grandmothers house, in the best way.

Webb’s auctions are many and varied and run the gamut from vintage motorcycles and modern design classics to fine wine and African art. Thursdays at Webb’s provides a more varied and eclectic selection than the more curated auctions but could provide just the intangible thing you’ve been looking for.

    The White Elephant

White Elephant has everything and the kitchen sink! Vintage bric a brac, crockery, furniture, old computers, clothing and even pre-loved houseplants. Enter with an open mind and you’ll leave with something you never knew you needed.

Beggar's Banquet is the most recent addition to the shops in St Kevin's Arcade. It fills a small corner space with it's eclectic treasures and is superbly curated. Named for the large table in the center, currently laden with mirrors, candles and an astronomy globe, the store has a distinctly mystical, slightly spooky, vibe. Dolls heads and plaster busts reside under glass domes and old wooden handled kitchen utensils and large pots hang from a perfectly weathered ladder in the window. There are character signs galore and interesting books to browse.

Bargain Hunting

What a treasure trove of antiques, op shop finds and general old skool goodness to be found at this little haven on the Shore. There are so many cool items for the home at Junk & Disorderly, a great selection of secondhand furniture and curated curios that will bring tears to the eyes of any bargain hunter or op shopper worth their salt - so good are the wares on sale here. In the weekends, there’s an awesome local vibe too with an on-site coffee caravan. Thanks for being in the hood, Junk & Disorderly!

My friends and I like to play dress ups - yep, I’m a big kid, I know. And when it comes time to create a new outfit the first place I hit up is SaveMart in New Lynn. It’s in my west Auckland hood so is just a stone’s throw from where I live but, no matter how many times I visit, I always manage to score a whole heap of new treasures for my wardrobe. My husband’s recent purchase of a corduroy suit and matching skinny for just $25 for the lot was a super steal.

I’ve never been one to buy designer clothes (my Scottish heritage prevents me from paying big dollars for any luxury items) but up-cycling is definitely my thing. Tatty’s is a recent - but heavenly - discovery for me because there’s lots of good-quality clothes to buy without the designer price tags. Now winter is almost here, I’m looking to shop up a storm and even better yet, it’s in my work local.

My grandma used to live in this neighbourhood and, as a teenager who was into grunge and Nirvana, I was a regular shopper at this hidden gem of an Auckland Cop Shop. The Salvation Army Family Store in Browns Bay is big and full of excellent finds - whether it’s antiques, clothing or homeware that you enjoy bargain hunting for most. Plus if you go mid-week, there’s barely anyone there so you can while away hours in this wicked little spot.

    Deco 2 Retro
    New Lynn
One of the best little op shops in the west, Deco 2 Retro is a great little find nestled in the middle of Glen Eden's suburbia. If you are keen on retro homewares, this is the place to go for good bargains. Plus they keep up an excellent rotation of stock so there is always something new to discover. I love this local because it's also next door to one of my favourite Thai restaurants and one of my favourite cafes, Humbug.
