Fabric Stores

Global Fabrics is a dream destination for those who sew. It is stocked with luxury fabrics from designers such as Marc Jacobs and DKNY and has an incredible range of silks, cottons, exotic prints and more. Lovely and helpful staff round out the experience in this airy showroom.

Martha's is my go to for furnishing fabrics. The selection is amazing and I especially love the range of natural and dyed linens and the exquisite jewel tones of the velvet. Oh to re-upholster all of my furniture in that luscious stuff. Also worth noting is that they sell feather pillow inners which can be hard to find. It helps that one can sit down for a coffee and a doughnut at Little & Friday after all that hard work.
  3. 3
    2
Centrepoint has a large selection of fabrics and is handy to central Auckland in its Newmarket store. Lace, satin, sequins, printed cottons, tulle and trimmings - they pretty much have everything.

Front Room produces hand printed furnishings in fine cottons, silks and velvets, all with a twist. The St Kevin’s Arcade storefront is like a miniature gallery in which the sumptuous items are displayed as they might be in a house.

Best shops for crafty people

You will not regret a visit to Geoff’s Emporium. It’s your one-stop-shop for all things crafty at super cheap prices. They have pretty much everything you need for most projects, whether you’re making a Halloween costume or scrapbooking or coming up with new, creative home decor. The staff are lovely and are happy to help you find what you’re looking for or reach something that’s just a little too high.
  2. 2

Look Sharp is probably best known for its costumes, but it is secretly a crafter’s paradise. They’ve got paints and canvases for the artist, fondant tools, food colouring pastes and cupcake wrappers for the cake decorator and fabrics and threads for the stitcher. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! All in one place and all very reasonably priced - love it!

    Masco Wools Ltd

You’re bound to find what you need in the perfect colour for that hat, scarf, baby blanket, etc. The staff are lovely and helpful and happy to answer questions and make suggestions. So many wonderfully talented people have stalls in Craft World. Even if you just go in for a look you’re likely to come out with something you just couldn’t walk away from. If you’re a crafty sort of person yourself, you’ll probably come out with all sorts of ideas of projects to to try yourself. Well worth a trip.

It can be a bit expensive, but Spotlight often has crafty stuff you just can’t find in other shops. It doesn’t matter what your chosen craft or hobby is, they’ll probably have what you need. As a crochet addict, I love the huge selection of yarn. Make sure you get a VIP card you can take advantage of all the sales.

Where to look at art

  1. 1
    7
Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts
    Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach
Te Tuhi is a space that has hosted an amazing array of contemporary exhibitions but still manages to distance itself from the swanky art vibe which can be off putting to the wider community. Not only is their main gallery space accessible to the general public but they pride themselves in creating a space which encourages community participation and engagement. This is a community space with heart and soul, this is what a centre for the arts is all about.

Perhaps one of the more accessible art spaces in Auckland, the Papakura Gallery draws from its local roots and hold it’s own in the art world. It may be one of the smaller spaces around but I always leave the gallery feeling more inspired then after any other gallery visit. As a Papakura girl at heart I can’t speak more highly of this little space and over the years I have seen it grow into the amazing gallery that it is today #proud.

    Artspace
    Newton
I have certainly been to my fair share of exhibition openings at Artspace and even as a poor student it was never the free food and wine that brought me back. Ok so maybe that played a tiny roll in it. Artspace time and time again blows my mind. I love walking into an exhibition which is going to challenge the way I look at the world, the way I feel about life, the way I smell the roses. This place cultivates innovative art practices and promotes risk taking, which in my books is what art is all about. Push your boundaries, go and check out some thought provoking and perhaps slightly a little left of centre art.

    Two Rooms
    Newton
Generally as a rule of thumb when a gallery is a little hard to find it’s worth looking for. That rule applies for Two Rooms, hidden on a side street just off Great North Road it doesn’t seem like the type of place to get your art fix. Looks can be deceiving, we all know that. The first exhibition I saw here was the stunning photographs of Frank Schwere as part of the Festival of Photography, if you are in to photography then head to google and check him out. I love going to a gallery space and feeling like its a second home, space to contemplate and to pace back and forth. Two Rooms is a second home and never fails to get the brain ticking over.

    St Paul St Gallery
    Auckland Central
St Paul St boasts three gallery spaces and a long history of innovative and captivating exhibitions. During the middle of the year the third gallery space on Symonds Street hosts student pilot shows every week, openings are on Wednesday nights and as a veteran pilot show opening attendee I know that every week brings something new to the table. Did I mention that students know how to put on a really good opening night spread? Make sure you turn up early though otherwise you’ll be walking around withl a rumbling stomach and we all know that its easier to appreciate art with a wine glass in hand and something to nibble on.
