- 233The LumsdenNewmarketStop in to Lumsden Freehouse in Newmarket for your craft beer fix. Their great outdoor area is perfect for enjoying a Tuatara, Epic or even a Renaissance Stonecutter.
- 317Vulture's LaneAuckland CentralO’Carroll’s is a freehouse meaning it has no affiliation with one particular brewery but they do have ‘tap takeovers’ from different craft breweries around NZ. The friendly staff and dark wood and stone aesthetic make for a very enjoyable evening.
- 44Andrew Andrew BarAuckland CentralA delightful wee spot on Princes Wharf. The perfect place to watch the game while enjoying a fine selection of craft beer. Whether it’s a Moa, Yeastie Boys or Hallertau - you’ll find something to wrap your laughing gear around in Andrew Andrew.
- 546Deep Creek Brewing CompanyBrowns BayLocated in Browns Bay, Deep Creek Bay brew onsite. Their selection is vast - I recommend giving their IPA - pontoon in a monsoon - a try! Open 11am to 11pm, 7 days.

Best pub food
- 17The Claddagh Irish PubNewmarketDinner and a drink or two at the Claddagh is the perfect way to end a lazy Saturday. The staff are friendly, the food is tasty and the atmosphere is great. Sitting by the heater and polishing off a yummy dessert will make you totally forget the stresses of the week and later on live music will keep you entertained.
- 24Brooklyn BarAuckland CentralBrooklyn Bar is an awesome place to grab dinner after work. I highly recommend the warm cajun chicken salad - the little roast potatoes and kumara really make the dish. The staff are nice and you never have to wait too long to eat.
- 333The LumsdenNewmarketIf you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere and good food, look no further than the Lumsden. It’s a great place for dinner on a weeknight. It doesn’t have a huge menu, but what they do serve is delicious - I’m a big fan of the fettuccini - and they have heaps of craft beers to try out, if you’re into that sort of thing. If it’s a bit busy and you end up sitting outside, fluffy blankets and big heaters will keep you toasty warm.
- 448Galbraith's AlehouseGraftonGlabraiths does a spectacular pub dinner. The lamb curry is delicious and the fries, thin cut with the potato skin still on, are so good my partner and I have been talking about them since we ate here. The building is historic and full of character, and the staff were all very friendly. Will definitely be going back.
- 512O'Hagans Irish Bar WaterfrontViaduct HarbourI went to O’Hagans with a small group for a work dinner, and we were all impressed with the food and the service we received. The atmosphere was great, the food was delicious, and live music and dancing kept us entertained well into the evening. Definitely recommend.

- 332Gypsy Tea RoomGrey LynnFirst I'm a sucker for a good name. The Gyspy Tea room just says "cool" to me. It's relaxed yet sophisticated. Cool but not try hardish. My perfect venue for a nightcap!
- 40Citizen Park Restaurant BarKingslandI have been here a couple of times now and group of friends and I decided recently we must go back there more. Such a easy going vibe, not too packed but busy enough.
- 577Golden DawnPonsonbyWhoever hires the bands and DJs at Golden Dawn should be acknowledged for their superb ear. This three piece were quirky yet ridiculously good.

Best Local Brews
- 12Forbidden Brewing Co.Long BayThere's so much good brewing out of this awesome local business, based in Warkworth. The lads that run Forbidden Brewing Co are clever at creating interesting, world-first ferments. Their cider is crisp, fresh and delicious. My fave is the apple but I can't wait to try their smoked cider. Check them out the next time you are on a roadie up north, just look for the red Cider Shed off State Highway 1.
- 219Puhoi HotelPuhoiOne of the coolest country pubs in New Zealand. Perfect spot to sink a pint and watch the river meander by.
- 333The LumsdenNewmarketThis is a craft beer lovers' paradise! A freehouse means The Lumsden isn't attached to any brewery so gets to showcase the very best of independent brewers, making it a great place to go for a pint. A lot of my friends are big beer drinkers and they like to pull up a pew here because of the diversity of drinking choices and the relaxed, laidback environment. I also love that there's lots of tasty pub grub up for grabs to complement your brew of choice. Love it!
- 426Leigh Sawmill CafeLeighA visit to Leigh Sawmill Cafe is always a pleasure and never a chore because this place is all about live music and excellent local beer. The staff are friendly and welcoming and I can never resist ordering a pizza because they are so good. They also do them to go.
- 5716 TunAuckland CentralEnjoyed a phenomenal ladies beer masterclass here with a passionate duo of sisters who play tastemakers at this free house on Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter. I loved Aotearoa Brewing Company’s Mata beer the best. A fantastic idea of a hen’s party or for ladies who love to lunch with a difference.

Best craft beer bars
- 10In an excellent location perched at the top of College Hill, Three Lamps Bar & Eatery is by far and away the best craft beer spot in Ponsonby. With a great selection of over 100 beers from across the World in bottles, plus a selection of Emerson’s favorites and their own Three Lamps brews on tap, there’s something for every taste. I’d recommend having a go at their own brand pilsner - it’s refreshing with a traditional hoppy bite. On the food side, it’s quality bistro fare here, with a menu that matches the beer list well. I’d recommend trying a few plates of mixed sliders with a group of mates.
- 226Brothers BeerAuckland CentralA must stop venue on any craft beer trip, great pizzas too. Hip location in City Works Depot near Food Truck Garage.
- 348Galbraith's AlehouseGraftonA great place for traditionally brewed beer, they have a great selection of quality ales. They have their own microbrewery on site - try the awesome chocolatey stout. Food is decent quality pub fare with large sized portions. Great for a pub lunch, or for a pre-rugby pint (it's not too far to Eden Park).
- 433The LumsdenNewmarketThe best craft beer haunt in Newmarket, and one of the best in Auckland. With an ever-changing list of beers on tap and in bottles, The Lumsden should be on every beer-lover's list. They run regular quizzes, and have a games night on Mondays. Food is quality pub fare (try the Meatlovers Antipasto Platter or the thermo-nuclear hot chicken wings). You'll need a pint or two to cool you down! But the absolutely best thing about the Lumsden is the 3-hour Happy Hour, every day from 4-7pm. Just right for after-work drinks :-)
- 517Vulture's LaneAuckland CentralOne of Auckland's best craft beer bars, always a good selection on tap and in the bottle. Usually have at least one beer from Epic on tap - try the Zythos if you can get it, or Hop Zombie for bucket loads more hops. Good location, right in the CBD, I've often ended up here at some point on a night out. Friendly staff, a good choice for after-work drinks.

- 336The Tasting ShedKumeuGreat little place, not too far to travel. It's great to sit outside at the big table with some nibbles and a glass of wine. Will be back to try the lunch menu.
