the Beer

They have a great beer selection (I love beer) and burgers!

Enjoyed a phenomenal ladies beer masterclass here with a passionate duo of sisters who play tastemakers at this free house on Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter. I loved Aotearoa Brewing Company’s Mata beer the best. A fantastic idea of a hen’s party or for ladies who love to lunch with a difference.

16 Tun is known for its extensive craft beer selection and its dishy bartenders wearing fruity waistcoats. Surprisingly no one ever mentions their whiskey selection. Stocking a range of 15-20 high quality drops from single malt to American rye, this copper clad beer haven is the perfect spot to grab a warming whiskey to finish off the night.

16 Tun has a fantastic range of beer on offer; they've just added 9 more taps to their line up making a grand total of 19. Since they've done this they've gone a little crazy with their selection adding some pretty 'out there' beers to their tap list such as a 8% sweet stout or a 9% double IPA by Tuatara. The bottle selection is equally as impressive, with over 50 locally brewed beers on offer in an excellent list meant to represent the very best of each style of brew - Try the Mikes Vanilla Coffee Porter, it's like dessert in a glass. The food is yet another reason to visit with an amazing menu including the moreish paua fritters (my favourite) or the zesty pan-fried snapper and pickled lemon sliders. Last of all the staff are a good time; ask for the famous Craft Beer Sisters if you want some solid advice on what to drink or even a bit of general banter, they'll be happy to oblige. 16 Tun is definitely my favourite contender for the title of Auckland's best beer bar!

This guide to Wynyard Quarter should have varied dining options - enter: 16 Tun. A popular kid on the strip, this spot is ‘the one’ for lovers of food and beer who like the two to match and compliment eachother. With 52 beers available, 10 of those on tap, a great wine list, and a menu showcasing delicious Kiwi fare, 16 Tun is an easy, palatable choice. And speaking of palatable, the menu choices (highlights include the Ruakaka fritters; Alpine origin merino lamb; Canterbury steak and quail egg; and the 16 Tun ceasar salad) are all devinely matched with one of their hand picked brews from around the country. And the staff have all the right suggestions - after their three day craft beer boot camp tasting prior to opening!

The craft brew revolution is alive and well with another home in downtown Auckland. 16 Tun is a slick new sanctuary for beer lovers, cleverly crafted by brew aficionados Andrew Ranum and Matthew Kelly. Set smack-bang in the middle of the most picturesque view of the City of Sails - Wynyard Quarter - it’s the perfect spot for Aucklanders to pay homage to our region’s talented independent brewers. And with more than 30 of them throughout New Zealand, there aren’t nearly enough bars to cater specifically to their frothy and fabulous creations - enter: 16 Tun. As a freehouse, 16 Tun isn’t associated with any brewery so it’s the ultimate panacea for those with a refined craft brew palette. Seven ciders and 52 beers, eight of those on tap available for between three and six-months, with two more bi-weekly rotating taps. So, rest assured, with every visit there’ll something new! And it’s not just a boys’ zone either, ladies - this suave, beer imbibing establishment puts everybody’s tastebuds at the forefront of its hospitality experience. Plus, I love the fact that the kitchen smashes out incredible Kiwi fare showcasing real New Zealand flavours. There’s Ruakaka Paua Fritters and Alpine Origin merino lamb, as well as all-important Kumara Fries and my favourite - the fish sliders. If you are really hungry you can opt for a full tun meal over a half tun. Clever, clever, clever!
