Academy Cinema

This little gem is tucked under the Auckland Central Library and is such an undiscovered treasure that it hurts me. $5 Wednesday movies is honestly the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and the selection of films is everything you could ever want. Director spotlights run regularly, showing less recent films by the big names that are not to be missed.

This place is a must check out if you like unique movie theaters. Usually a great variety of films to choose from. Small and cozy

This is an Auckland Institution, if you haven't been to this cinema hidden under the Central Library you're really missing out. If you love good quality movies, in an intimate setting with other cinephiles, this is the spot for you. Pretty sure they have a $10 night too.

This hidden gem is no secret for film lovers but is still largely unknown to wider Auckland. They play off-beat, independent and alternative flicks that would be difficult to come across anywhere else. The theatres are cozy and the waiting room is warm and comfortable. The prices are no more than larger cinemas. Strongly suggest heading along on a Wednesday for $5 showings.

This cinema is also good for showing movies outside your typical blockbuster films. A great casual cinema with a foyer where you can sit pre-movie and grab an ice cold beer or yummy coffee!

The inner city’s small but perfectly formed cinema spot known as the Academy Cinemas is a great place to while away a few hours and conveniently located beneath the Central Library. They usually stick to art house fare and foreign language films and the staff are truly passionate about film.

At Academy you can find all sorts of movies that don’t make it to other cinemas. If you’re into international films, documentaries, and other non-mainstream cinema, this is the place to go. It’s a lovely theatre and the prices are really reasonable - they even have the occasional free screening!

If you’re looking for interesting arty movies in Auckland - look no further than Academy Cinema! Lovely space, such a central location. I always feel like I’m going deep into some sort of prohibition-era secret cinema when I walk down the stairs into Academy. Love it.

An odd, poky wee cinema, that is dedicated to showing more obscure films, which I love about it! Tends to screen these types of films for longer than some of Auckland’s other arthouse cinemas too.
