Back before the Internet, there were these magnificent things called books - hand-held portals of entertainment and education that delighted and informed people in equal measure.

At Auckland Central Public Library, you'll find shelves upon shelves of books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs encompassing every topic imaginable. They're free to borrow once you sign up with a library card, and once you join you also have access to the Auckland City Council network of libraries across the city. Free Wi-Fi is also available, and there's also a cafe where you can sip an espresso while catching up on your reading.

Great local recommendation Cindy P!

When most people think of libraries they just think books, but it's so much more than that now, with music, movies, free wi-fi, a cafe and sometimes there are events too. I find I've always got a reason to visit the library when I'm in the city.

I love my local library in Onehunga but like to visit the central library to check out promotions and exhibits.

It's never too early (or too late) to get your kids stuck into reading! The theme for these school holidays is 'Horrible Histories and Heroes', and all the branches of the Auckland Libraries will be hosting tons of great activities, for free! Go online to find out more about what's on at which locations. Make sure to swing by the Central City branch to check out their fantastic new fit-out of the children's area too.

Around 6,000 new titles will be available , eBook and eAudiobook collections from December 3,2013 for free up to 21 days for members. Children’s free Dare to Explore holiday programme combines the fun of reading with activities, games and adventures.

It might sound old-school, but visiting the library is one of my favourite ways to spend a rainy day. I love to read, and you can spend all day here just browsing through the books and then curl up in a comfy chair and read the day away. Best of all, it’s free!

Even if another library is closer to where you live, take the time to visit the Auckland Central library. Browse the masses of books, ride the escalator up and down, get a coffee, play with the microfiche machine, maybe even do some reading. It’s a great place to spend some quiet time, to people watch, and to learn a thing or two about anything you want.

There's not much you can say about a library except the staff are extremely helpful and friendly, and I love going to their book sales every year for a bargain.
