What ginormous markets! It will take a good few hours just to make it round the whole place. While there is bargains to be found I find u have to be careful to inspect before u purchase I bought a “new” DVD player that when I got home didn’t work and I wouldn’t trust all the food there also that’s just my opinion. Traffic is a nightmare every Sunday morning and the place is a mess at the end of it but still defiantly worth the visit

i really enjoy going to this market, they have some amazing produce here, it seems thats the biggest buisness. fruit or clothing. there is no huge competition between the stalls though and they all seem to be happy at the end of the day, the produce goes quick though so you need to be there early to get the best stuff =)

It pays to get there early on a Sunday morning - the earlier the better for second hand bargain hunting, as well as actually being able to move through the isles of fruit and vegetables with ease! There is a huge variety of fresh and cheap produce to choose from and often obscure and unusual vegetables are available for Asian cooking that are hard to find elsewhere. The Avondale markets are such a vibrant mix of Aucklanders, making it lots of fun for a Sunday morning.

Get here early on Sunday or fageddabouit! This is the biggest fresh air food and flea market in Auckland. Cheap veggies, eggs, tofu and even some meats and breads. Numerous coffee carts. A family fave.

The Sunday Avondale Market is a massive market so be prepared to weave through the crowd to find great prices on local produce.  It is quite easy to buy bag fulls of produce at a fraction of the cost from the supermarkets.  It's fantastic!! They also sell the basics in the clothing department for super cheap prices.  What I really love is the "junk" section of the market where you can find some real unique jems.   I found a really cool cooper clock pan that had just the right amount of personality to hang with my eclectic house decor.  There is also a Antique Market set inside for the hardcore collectors.

This is not the place to come if you want to drink a latte and peruse cheese. Avondale Market is always busy but really worth a look and is a great start to a Sunday. The people are vibrant and friendly, the food is great and perfect to stock up on if you are on a budget. There are also people selling a bunch of second hand items and lots of factory made goods. There is just no way you can justify shopping for produce at Countdown when you can get bags of apples for $2 or tomatoes for 50 cents a kilo.

One of those granny shopping trolleys would be the best thing to bring to the Avondale markets, along with a bit of cash and an eye for a bargain. Excellent produce selection - some of the stuff (citrus especially, I've noted) is (uncertified) organic, grown on family lots up north, and all of the stuff is as fresh if not much fresher, than you'll find elsewhere, for a fraction of the price. I love the fresh Thai herbs grown in the back yards of a few friendly Thai women, who also sell larb, spring rolls and peanut dumplings - all delicious. Don't bother paying for the horrible carpark, just park a bit further away and walk - it's quicker than circlign round in the car.

Avondale Sunday Markets are a mixed bag - you can get batteries, well-worn shoes, torn paperbacks, walkmans, odd looking toys, imitation everything from playboy bunny to sports brands - but the main reason I go there is for the food. A large portion of the market is dedicated to fresh fruit and veges and it's all at a very reasonable price - better than you'd find in any supermarket or fruit and vege store. Make sure you have a good look around to get the best pick of produce - one stall's coriander can look withered while another's will look positively vibrant. It's not so good if you're going along with a recipe, better to see what's there and create meals in your head at the time. Also the guy who carves things out of carrots is AMAZING - if you go make sure to find him.

I usually visit here every second week to pick up cheap fruit and veges for the week. It’s usually second grade produce but if you can get over the odd blemish here and there, it’s a great place to go and save some money. There’s also a variety of stalls set up selling the same thing week in, week out, and items if deliciousness such as samoan Poke and donuts, coconut buns, Asian breads and pastries, and my favourite; pork buns!
