Pravin is the second generation owner of Bhana Bros. His father and uncle started selling fruit and vegetables on the site in the mid 1930's. This is the elder statesman of Ponsonby Rd and has certainly seen many trends passing through. Fresh fruit and veges are still the core of the shop, with a great range of flowers and deli items, being recent additions.
If you find yourself with an empty fridge, a dinner quest arriving and the thought of the guaranteed after-work supermarket queue too much to face, head straight to Bhana Brothers.

Bhana Brothers has become a bit of a one-stop shop for me since moving into the area. Initally I was drawn in by their fantastic range of flowers. Now it has become a regular for me, especially on a lazy Friday night when I feel like staying in and treating myself a bit. Often after visting Mag Nation next door for an interesting read, I choose some of the beautiful blooms from outside, and then make my way inside for some fresh handmade pasta and produce to match - recently my vege of choice has been asparagus. The more unusual blooms are kept down the back inside, and there is one shopkeeper in particular who is very knowledgable and happy to pass on his green wisdom. I recently bought some very unusual-looking vivid green flowers, which he said were from the carnation family - who would have guessed. Always a pleasant way to spend a few minutes and then head home to enjoy my bounty.
