When ordered to go to Banks Peninsula in 1843, it is unlikely that William Birdling had any idea a bit of the area would be named after him!

However, some 170 years later and Birdlings Flats has retained its historical presence, and become an iconic coastal batch settlement.

About an hour south of Christchurch, this small but close knit community thrive in the natural beauty and amazing surf-casting fishing spots.

Away from technology and the hustle and bustle of the city, Birdings Flat remains a true colonial, coastal town, making it ideal for a daily getaway.

A vast area perfect for exploring and BBQing, Birdlings Flat is a fascinating terrain and be warned, the beach is definitely not for swimming in! Experience the superb wild life of the area and the impressive natives.

Perilous to swim in (don’t even try) but amazing for its disc-like rocks that make up the beach. There’s some good fishing to be had, but otherwise just enjoy the crunchy sliding noises under your feet as you pad about.
