Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua is a spectacular landmark at the North Island's most northwestern part where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. 5 and 1/2 hours from Auckland, the drive up there makes for the perfect road trip winding through picturesque kiwi countryside and past beautiful beaches that will take your breath away.

For Maori, the cape is a traditional departing point for dead spirits as they journey home to the underworld. It is very popular with visitors, especially with the recently sealed road from the nearest town of Te Hapua.

Being a sacred site, eating is not permitted at Cape Reinga. However if you're looking for a good picnic spot, take the turn off to beautiful Tapotupotu Bay, 5km before the Cape.

Got not much money but lots of time? Then wind you way up to the tip of New Zealand. Just getting there is an adventure and it has huge national significance - a must do for every kiwi! Once there you can explore the Cape, learn about the light house then hit some mad beaches on the way back down.

Going to the very tip of New Zealand and taking in the historic lighthouse, vast views and the seas that meet is a powerful and important New Zealand experience. It's one that all kiwis and tourists should do in their life time. Take your time winding up the cape as the drive is stunningly scenic and there are many little bays you can drop into for a swim and relax. Or check out the northernmost town while you're there - Ta Hapua, it's pretty unique!
