Cheltenham Beach is located in the quaint harbourside Auckland village of Devonport. Just 1.5 km from the ferry terminal, the long sandy beach is popular with locals and visitors who can enjoy strolling, relaxing, a family picnic, or a climb up to the North Head Historic Reserve.
With uninterrupted views of Rangitoto island, there are cafes, restaurants, takeaways and a kids playground nearby. Although safe for swimming, at low tide it can be quite a walk to get to deeper waters.
It's a great spot to grab some fish and chips and sit back on a sunny afternoon.

Golden, sparkling sand, blooming pohutukawas and a still, quiet ocean with Rangitoto Island in full view, there's no place quite as good to swim on Auckland's North Shore as Cheltenham Beach. Park up, strip off, take an inflatable and rest easy as you float on the deep blue ocean. It's a great place to take someone who might be a little afraid of sea swimming and afterwards you can continue the Kiwi summer traditions by indulging in a big ice cream or feed of top-quality fish and chips from the local store.
I love Cheltenham because although it is so out in the open it never seems like there are ever many people there. Driving through Devonport to get there already sets the scene for a summertime getaway, the spot definitely has a summer vacay feel. The water here is so clear, it is so nice to swim in and it seems like Rangitoto Island is just a 2 minute swim away. So with an amazing view and tranquillity without having to drive too far away and go for a Bear Grylls type hike to get away from people, this place is the perfect place to find all that with little effort.
Great beach- quite secluded from the main area of Devonport and the main road. A little confusing to find with the small side, residential streets on the way. Or you can climb North Head and then walk down the other side. Probably my favourite- clean, not so crowded and beautiful surroundings. Restaurant on the beachfront. Have yet to try. Check this beauty out!
This is a nice white, sandy beach to take the kids to in the Summer. Not too far to go to from most locations in Auckland on a sunny day, this beach is a lovely spot. It's quite tidal though, so you may want to time it depending on your preference. We found it fine either way for toddlers. There's also a shower to rinse off in near the entrance to the beach.
