My sister-in-law was visiting from Auckland and this was the only place she was dying to visit! Their homemade pies are world famous in New Zealand and what could be more iconic than a pie on a road trip!

Who ate all the pies? We did when we were taking a road trip through Wairarapa to Gisborne. One of the best parts of my gig is knowing all the award-winning foodie haunts in New Zealand. So it wasn't at all by chance that on a sunny Tuesday I found myself chowing down on the most delicious steak and red wine pie that I've ever tasted. Supreme pie winners and true lovers of traditional baking, their digs is an old church, their door handle is a rolling pin and you can see the bakers working the dough through a special viewing area in the cafe. All pie lovers must stop here because these pies are the best in NZ.

We passed through Carterton a few weeks ago and we called in for something to eat! The bakery firstly smells amazing and the food looks and tastes delicious. They are famous in Carterton for their pies, homemade breads and creative desserts, I can't wait to go back!

One of the best places for brunch is Clareville Bakery, try the creamy locally sourced Parkvale mushrooms, Basque eggs or baker’s breakfast. The bread is perfect, crunchy crusty ciabatta and the coffee is the perfect accompaniment. If you don’t feel like a meal, enjoy a bacon buttie, freshly made pastries or real vanilla custard cronuts.

With lots of tasty baked goods, you might find it hard to choose but you can bet you won’t regret opting for anything. Along with a great selection of cakes, expertly crafted pies are seriously good - I recommend the lamb and kumara mash pie that won the 2014 Supreme Award for Best Pie in New Zealand or the beef red wine. They’re so yummy, I guarantee you’ll be buying some to take home.

Massive congratulations to Clareville Bakery for winning gold in the 2014 Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards. Open since 2013, the hard-working owner Michael Koeg is passionate about creating good pies. And his unique creation of a lamb cutlet and kumara mash pie beat out 4800 other pies to be named the overall supreme winner. With light buttery pastry encasing a juicy lamb cutlet and with a sprig of rosemary on top, this is an absolute must-try for anyone driving through Carterton.

Head down here on Wednesday open-mic nights when they offer dinner and live music. Set in an old school, they serve European-style food and are licensed so you can unwind with a drink with a delicious winter meal. For dessert, try a decadent cronut, a donut/croissant hybrid made with flaky pastry and real vanilla bean custard. It is a popular event, so book ahead to get a spot.

The Clareville Bakery is just outside of Masterton, about 10 minutes away, but it is worth the drive. The European-style bakery is inside an old church which has an amazing atmosphere for their open mic nights on Wednesdays. Try the caramelised walnut and blue cheese baguette or one of the cronuts - they use real vanilla beans to flavour the custard. If you are just passing by, you must grab a loaf of the Pain Au Levain (sourdough) - the Clareville bakers are reknowned for their breads.
