The ultimate place for the city's LGBT community to party, Family Bar is an Auckland nightclub that's a total institution. It's a wonderful place to dance the night away under a glittering disco ball and some of the best nights I've ever had with a close gay friend have been right here on the dance floor. It's a great spot to celebrate in February when Auckland's Pride Festival is in full swing.
Sometimes you need karaoke in your life and why not head along out Family Bar’s camp karaoke for a bit of a laugh. This is one of those places that is everything goes and the crowd will always cheer you on. Great for first time karaoke singers and even better when you grab a friend to head up on stage with.
So its really late at night and you want to get out there and shake your booty without the opposite sex getting way too close while you do? Family is the kind of place where you end your night, the kind of place that you often stumble out of as the sun is rising. Drag shows on Friday and Saturday nights are always great entertainment just take note: things don’t get going until after midnight so if you turn up any earlier you may not have the best time.
Oh how I do love this place. This is everyone’s favourite gay bar in Auckland! I come here with my girl friends to get away from the sleaziness of any other club or bar in Auckland, and it is pretty much the perfect place to go because if you are a girl then you are pretty much invisible here. It can get quite ego damaging after a while however. There are more shirtless men here than at a beach and everyone is just out to have a great time, the vibe is always so fun and light hearted. There is a stage to rock out on and a HUGE disco ball surrounded by other little ones to give it a dancing queen-esque feel. A favourite pastime of mine is taking single straight male friends here and watching them get eaten alive.
Aucklands only proper gay club, which is great if you are into pumpin pop music and smoke machines. Drag queens are always entertaining, and it’s great fun most of the night. A bit later though as the straight crowds make their way in, you may find a few oogling guys if, as a lesbian, you want to kiss your gf! :/ also have been varying reports of the safety of the club after around 3am, but have never experienced anything bad as such myself. Always a fun night. Good outdoor area for smokers too.
