The Gisborne Botanical Gardens became a public garden back in 1874 and is the city's oldest reserve. Situated on 5 hectares of land between Aberdeen Road and the Taruheru River, features include large mature trees, ponds, a cactus collection, aviary and a kids playground.

The park houses three sister city gardens, which represent Gisborne's relationship with Gisborne in Australia, Nonoichi in Japan and Palm Desert in the USA. There are also a number of other gardens including the New Zealand Native Bush Garden, along with several interesting sculptures and artworks.

Not only are the Gisborne Botanical Gardens one of the most picturesque places to enjoy the beginning of spring but according to locals, there's a hotbed of Pokemon Go characters to be found. Yep, there's lots of leaves rustling in this public park. But be warned! Gisborne locals have taken to Pokemon Go with gusto - it's one of the three regions in New Zealand where the augmented reality game is most popular.

On the banks of the Taruheru River the five-acre garden dates back to 1874 with many of the original trees remaining. The urban space, with its large trees is a beautiful peaceful spot close to the city is ideal for a picnic or stroll and boasts an aviary and children’s playground.
