Hairy Mclairy and his gang of furry friends are coming to the Tauranga waterfront this July! The creations of Dame Lynley Dodd have come to life in bronze thanks to the hands of Brigitte Wuest, a renowned Kiwi Sculptor. These lovingly created statues will adorn the Tauranga Waterfront and add a bit of fun and character to the area.

The sculptures have been funded by government and community groups around the Bay of Plenty and represent a celebration of one of New Zealand's best selling writers - Lynley Dodd.

The names of dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm and tomcat Scarface Claw fall off the lips of most kids. Anyone who has entered the world of Lynley Dodd’s books and the adventures of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy and his friends will identify with the life-sized bronze statues of her magic feline and canine literary characters on The Strand waterfront. They’re worth a stop and fun for kids of all ages.

Lynley Dodd’s rumpty canine gang are now hanging out in downtown Tauranga next to the playground on the revamped Wharf district. Hairy Maclary, Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts, Schnitzel von Krumm, Bitzer Maloney, Zachery Quack and Muffin McLay watched over by the very bossy tom-cat, Scarface Claw, have taken a life in bronze, where kids can clamber, explore and create their own tales in this amazing new playground.

I’m sure almost every Kiwi kid remembers the Hairy Maclary books by Tauranga’s own Lynley Dodd. The Tauranga city council has commissioned a set of bronze sculptures that immortalise some of your favourite characters from the books. The sculptures have been created by artist and Swiss expat Brigitte Wuest who moved her family to NZ in 1999 to work with Weta Workshops on Lord of the Rings… and well she never left! Get down to the site now and visit with Hairy Maclary and his friends.
