Hawke’s Bay is internationally recognised as the fruit bowl of New Zealand with some of the best fresh local produce. Some of the finest producers are come together to be showcased at the market. There’s everything you can imagine at the Hastings market on Sunday. It is one of the largest and longest running in the country as well as a tourist attraction. The Saturday Napier Urban Market is smaller but just as good.
One of the oldest and biggest markets its at its best in summer outside under the shade of the old trees in the beautiful Waikoko Gardens in the A & P Showgrounds. It’s a local social haven, but don’t be surprised if you run into someone from your hometown because it’s a favourite haunt for visitors. It’s got everything you can imagine grown in the Hawke’s Bay fruit bowl. There are so many gourmet delights I find it so hard not to buy too much.
When the leaves fall from the beautiful deciduous trees New Zealand’s longest running Farmers’ Market goes undercover in winter. Protected by the stands at the A & P Showgrounds the winter maket still reflects the tasty bounty grown and produced by local and passionate artisans. This is my Sunday treat where I can meet the locals, browse and be tempted to stock up on seasonal goodies and indulge in crafted cheeses, organic foods and produce, baked goods, preserves and amazing coffee.
Fresh produce is what Hawke’s Bay does best and the summer Hastings Farmer’s Market under the old trees in the A & P Showground – one of the originals – is not-to-be-missed. Local organic cheeses, wine, olive oil, fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, juices, figs, hot coffee – you name it and it’s there. If you can’t get to Hastings, try the Napier Urban Food Market, or the Gisborne Farmer’s Market.
