The Huatoki Walkway is a picturesque riverside track starting at the river mouth (by the Wind Wand) and ending at the Huatoki Domain. Taking approximately 90 minutes one way, the gently graded walking track takes you on a scenic route along the banks of the Huatoki River past city buildings, residential housing, parkland and native bush.

Highlights include Sir Victor Davies Park, New Plymouth Rose Gardens, Marsland Hill Reserve, Baines Terrace, Glenpark Reserve and the Tupari Reserve where you can stop off, rest your legs and let the kids run wild in the playground.

It’s not exactly mountain biking but 90% of the trail is in the bush with the ease of a pathway rather than dirt to make it easier for children and elderly riders. This is one of the most enjoyable rides in the city, as you could go as slow and almost as fast as you want! I love that it starts more inland where it is bushier, and slowly the environment gets more urban depending how far you go!

Huatoki Walkway has over 13 different entry points which makes it a huge walk that is bound to tucker your furry friend out! It cuts right through the heart of New Plymouth City so it’s probably one of the better walkways with more sights to see on the way; it’s not only for your dog but for you too! It’s an awesome way to exercise your dog whether you do the whole run or even just half.

The Huatoki Walkway has been a well-loved bike trail for years, over half the course is underneath the nice shady trees to protect you from the beating down sun. The pathway has recently been resealed so there’s an easier and smoother ride; especially those who only do light exercise or are leisurely cyclers!
