The Hundertwasser Toilets are named after their world-famous architect and artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

These toilets are the only artwork which the Austrian artist and permanent Kawakawa resident made in the Southern Hemisphere, opening in 1999 before passing away in 2000.

Made of local recycled materials including a wine bottle window, the Hundertwasser Toilets are amazingly original and more importantly, functional!

This is probably the only place in New Zealand where going to the toilet counts as a fun, free activity. But that's because Kawakawa has the very special Hundertwasser toilets. Designed by an artist you feel like you're walking into a work of art rather than the bathroom. I always enjoy the novelty of this place whenever I'm passing through this town.
