The spectacular Hunua Falls are located on the western side of the Hunua Ranges Regional Park. Approximately 1 hour southeast of Auckland, the falls are part of the Wairoa River and are 30 meters in height.

A popular tourist spot, there is a large flat area with picnic tables, toilets and a car park nearby. There are a couple of walking track including an easy 30 minute loop that takes you past many native trees and ferns including Totara, Ponga and Tanekaha.

Stop off at the elevated lookout where you can grab a fabulous photo of the falls and surrounding forest.

It’s free and awe-inspiring

Just 60km from Auckland's CBD is one of the South's most beautiful, picturesque places - the powerful and picture-perfect Hunua Falls. One of the many fantastic natural phenomena in the gorgeous Hunua Ranges that flank the south of the city, these falls are very easy to get to and there is picnic and toilet facilities near by. To get the best view of the rushing white water cascading down the rock face, it's worth setting aside an extra half-hour and taking in the vista of the falls and surrounding native forest from all angles. The track is well sign-posted from the car park near the falls. However, swimming is not recommended as it can be dangerous.

Hunua Falls is really beautiful... But I wouldn't go swimming in the waterfall pool. There are some great walks around.
