Established in 2009, Kai o Te Aro is a community garden project based in the Aro Valley in Wellington. Founded by Charles Barrie and a number of local residents, they currently have three gardens, two of which are based at the old Victoria University carpark.

Named 'The Secret Garden', 'The Orchard' and 'The Steps', gardeners get the opportunity to grow a range of organic fruit and vegetables, much of which is donated to the local community. They also learn new skills such as soil maintenance and compost building, while working bees are held on the third Sunday of each month.

Kai o Te Aro is the community garden you walk past all the time if you live in Aro Valley. The campus services at VUW have a link where you can volunteer to go plant stuff, and reap the benefits. This is such an easy and fun way to get out and do something for, and with the community.
