The Kawaroa Rock Pools are located in Kawaroa Park in New Plymouth. Just off the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway, the pools are popular with local children who love to spend time investigating them at low tide.

Also a favourite spot for educational class visits, many an artists has sat down by the reef and created a beautiful landscape painting.

A great activity that doesn't cost a cent, look closely and you can spot one of many fabulous creatures that inhabit the pools including crabs, sea anemone, starfish, kina and more. There are also plenty of fossils to explore.

Taking a trip to the rock pools is another free activity that’s great in summer when the days are long and the tide is out. This is especially popular for the kiddies but also for the young adults who haven’t let childhood go yet; like me! There are all sorts of weird and wonderful life forms to discover here. 16 days ago CommentShare

Going to the Rock pools has always been a favourite past time of mine as a child. Even now it’s still fun to go looking under rocks and exploring the magic of underwater creatures. The rock pools are just down from the Kawaroa playground so you could even kill two birds with one stone and do both activities in one day! Exploring the pools can also teach children a lot about the ecology of the ocean, perhaps see if they notice if particular creatures are closer or further away from the tide.
