Lake Benmore was formed from the upper reaches of the Waitaki River by a hydro-electric power dam. It has two arms: the Ahuriri Arm and the Haldon Arm. The latter has some swift-flowing water as a result of the Benmore Dam.
Lake Benmore holds numerous trout and salmon, and offers excellent fishing either trolling from a boat or fishing from the shore.

A superb fishing spot, this is the most fished lake of any in the Fish & Game region. So you may want to give this little lake a rest! If not, then head along and enjoy some of the best fishing NZ has to offer. It produces a prolific amount of brown and rainbow trout and is an excellent camping spot, too!
