You can't go past a DOC campsite... for those of you who are not familiar with DOC, this is the Government Department of Conservation who offer unique locations to camp around NZ at super low prices (usually around $5, on an honesty donation box system). This one on the shore of Lake Tarawera is particularly special in the fact that there are thermal hot-spots on the beach, so you can dig your own little spa pools. Enjoy!

With Mt Tarawera making for a breathtaking backdrop, Lake Tarawera is world renowned not only for its beauty and also for the size and condition of its trout. There are also several great Department of Conservation camping sites around the shores, so this is a great holiday spot too.
