The savvy dudes behind Ponsonby Social Club, namely Sharr Bezarti, Rodney Gower, Bobby Brazuka and Tony McGeorge, have created a wicked late night eatery to soak up all that excess booze in the most pleasurable way possible.

Being responsible has never been so tasty, with American diner classics like pumpkin pie, cheese and bacon burgers and deep fried pickles on offer late into the night. Never fear herbivores! You will not go home drunk and hungry, either with a range of warming soups and an outstanding three cheese lasagna.

The Late Night Diner is the perfect place to go if you're hungry for a good meal after trekking up and down Franklin Road, or even if you're just after a great dessert. This place is open pretty late as the name suggests and the food is top notch but without the expensive price tag for its location. I'm a big fan of their veggie burger which is one of the best I've tasted and of course I have to follow it with their chocolate and peanut butter fondant which is sublime.

In sixth place it’s Late Night Diner, beating my seventh seeded burger joint for one reason, which I will explain to you in due course. Let me say first that I was ecstatic when this joint opened. I recall too many nights finishing work around midnight in Ponsonby with little-to-no choice for a quality late night bite. Now, thanks to this team, those days are no more. On the burger front, it is not the place to come if you’re looking for choice, but it is the place to come for a delicate and lovingly made beef, bacon and cheese burger. It’s brilliant to watch it all happen in front of you as the team fastidiously prepare your order. The meat paddie sizzles to your desired finish, the cheese placed precisely on top liquifies, the bacon grilled under strict supervision to perfection, the pickles sliced lengthways so they stick out just a touch to make their presence known. The team are meticulous, they care, they look cool while they do it, and the result is a damn fine burger.

Perfect place to stop by after dinner for a milkshake dessert! #darkhorse

Sometimes dessert is in liquid form and this is when you need a really good chocolate milkshake in your life. Late Night Diner, like the name suggests is open late which means more time to digest your dinner and head out for a liquid dessert. So simply yet so so good!

If you are hankering for a meal of fish and ships late then head to Late Night Diner for their beer battered version with skinny cut fries.

Best vege burger I have ever had. For serious. Really unusual type of vege burger, I think that’s what makes it so great. It’s some kind of seed and grain patty, delicious. Also the deep fried pickles are so amazing! And it’s open…. late!! :D

So many things to love about this cute american style diner. High on my list is their amazing milkshakes. I recommend pairing their vanilla thickshake with their deep fried oreos - so decadent.

Have you ever imagined yourself as a 1950’s film star, sitting in the booth at a diner sipping on a shake while you admire your Cadillac parked outside? Ok, so perhaps I’m a bit of a dreamer but I think I may have found the next best thing. Right in the heart of Ponsonby you will find the sweetest little American style late night diner. You can admire the super cute waiters wearing crisp white shirts and black suspenders as you tune in to the soundtrack of an all American roadtrip. There is much more to the menu then sloppy burgers and fries, think American diner style with a hint of Ponsonby Road class. Burgers and fries yes, but without the added heart attack. Did I mention it is open all hours of the night – yep that’s right, you have just discovered your new go-to after a night out on the town.

Felt just like a diner also interactions with the Chef made the food choice easier.

This place is suave and you definitely feel like you’ve been transported out of Auckland the minute you get in the door. I’ve always had excellent service here and it’s always buzzing with people. Try the oreo doughboys (deep fried oreos) with a side of vanilla shake. Makes for a super fun night when paired with an alcoholic vanilla or chocolate shake!
