Maori Bay is an exposed beach and point break just south of Muriwai out in the West Coast. It is considered to be a surfer’s haven because of consistent hollow barrels and swells throughout the year. To get to the beach you’ll find yourself traversing a steep gravelly path, and it has a more relaxed vibe than the nearby beach spots since there are less chances that it would get crowded.

If you’re looking for more of a casual swim, you might find Maori Bay to be a bit overwhelming as there’s no lifeguard on duty and the occasional rips could take you to the rocky parts of the beach. However if you’re more on the adventurous side, you’ll enjoy the dependable surf, and Southwesterly winds make it a good place to paraglide and hang glide. Locals also love walking through the tunnel cave, seeing the gannet colony, and just simply taking in the view.
