These guys have been around forever, If you’re after a few audible gems, pay them a visit. Look through their selection of vinyl at their online store and be tempted. I checked with them and Marbecks have around 1000 records in stock at any given time - new releases, import and rare new vinyl. They have a special order service where they can track down new, second-hand and rare records from suppliers here, USA, England and Europe. Also some good news - the shop is about to triple in size
If you open this box, you'll find all genres of music, and the staff and both knowledgable and helpful. I usually pop into buy presents for family and friends, and always reappear on Queen Street with a little gem for self. If you enjoy fossicking, and I don't mean the usually chaotic and relentless task of trying to find something in the larger chain stores CD bins, then Marbecks is definitely worth a visit. Don't expect to only drop in, as this store really is a musical Alladins cave. If you want to find it, then I have no doubt you will.
LAst time I was in I overheard one of the 3 or 4 reliable and knowledgable staff saying they were "trying to hang in there" despite it being so quiet. It would seem classical music has been hit hard too , perhaps less from downloading and more from the recession, but either way it would be a shame to see this great store go. I've bought many specific recommendations from the staff and never once been disappointed.
Marbecks have been down in Queen's Arcade for decades. (I remember my first visit, on my 16th birthday to buy a copy of Bob Dylan's "The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3" back in '91) The last decade has been rough for the music business, and where once there were dozens of music stores lining Queen Street, these days Marbecks is one of the few left standing. What separates Marbecks from the competition is that the staff here really know their stuff, and that the selection of music is absolutely fantastic - as well as a great selection of new releases and chart hits, there's a vast back catalogue and well stocked genre sections for country, jazz, blues, etc. One of those shops were you can really lose yourself in. Well worth a visit ...
