If you're new in town and looking for THE spot to soak up the sun and splash away the heat of the day, it's got to be at Matapouri Bay's Mermaid Pools. They're just a short hike over the hill and around the corner, the tracks are well maintained and visible to most. Just follow the trail of people heading to and from the north end of the bay. It's a real postcard of a swimming hole surrounded by rocks to chill on and jump off of. Bring your mates, or kids, it's suited to everyone. P.S keep an eye out for the odd mermaid!

Love coming here on a sunny weekend. It's right in the middle of Tutukaka and tends to be the more popular beach for the beach goers in the Whangarei region. It's got everything! Picturesque walks from one end to the other, with each end having it's own little gem nestled in there (The Mermaid Pool being one of them). There is also an awesome walk from Matapouri to the neighboring bay Whale Bay.

If the perfect swimming hole is defined by tranquility and fun, then Matapouri’s Mermaid Pools are the golden standard. It’s nothing but postcard pools and wonderful leaps from all heights when it comes to this spot! This place is pretty popular but every now and then you get lucky enough to have it all to yourself. About 15 minutes walk around Matapouri Bay, be sure to bring some shoes and a camera!

This is a gorgeous bay to go for a paddle or a surf in. After all your running around treat yourself to a nutritious kiwi BBQ - it’s electric which makes things a bit easier!

With this bright blue water and long sweep of white sand you could assume you’re in the tropics! Matapouri Bay is a local favourite. One of the coolest things about this beach is you can access secret magical mermaid pools at low tide. The walkway is at the end of the beach and takes about 20 minutes before coming out at some deep rock pools. You can check out the sea life or fling yourself off a rock into the deep swimming hole - it’s awesome! Pro tip: bring your shoes because the rocks can be pretty sharp.
