MOTAT Museum of Transport and Technology

Love this place - great for the whole family!!

I absolutely love MOTAT. So much so that I have a years pass - a pretty economical option seeing as it only costs the same as if you were to go to MOTAT twice in a year. The exhibitions that the museum puts on are always relevant and relate the history they show to modern day life. There's plenty of interactive activities as well which means that kids love it. The Victorian Village is always popular with the beautiful Chapel (which you can hold weddings in) and the school house but I think my most favourite area is the tram house. I love to look at the old trams and they have done such a fantastic job of restoring them. Of course a trip to MOTAT wouldn't be complete without a ride on the tram that journeys between here and MOTAT 2 which is included in the cost of your ticket price. I really love how MOTAT is paying attention to more special event now as well. Christmas in the Victorian Village was magical with fairy lights, mulled wine and traditional games lead by actors in historical dress.

This place has got to be on your Top 10 family day out list.  Often you can get a voucher in a local newspaper for free entry for Auckland rate-payers.  Look out for them in community rags particularly just before school holidays and the whole family can go for free. Theres all kinds of parts to this place with old to new technolgy for all manner of things, a kids play area to get into science at a nitty gritty yet fun level.  Do not miss the mirror maze or tactile dome.. kids will get lost here for ages!  sneak off to the cafe for a quick coffee. The model train is a high light for us as is the tram ride round the park to the other part of this fantastic museum. The aeronautical bit.  Well worth seeing. Theres also old town and of course the 3D ride.. very cool & certainly worth the short wait. Motat is a must for all Aucklander's & their children!
