This is another one of those places that is perfect for group gatherings. It's BYO so you'll see large groups of friends, crates of beers in tow. This is how Izakaya places like Nishiki are meant to be enjoyed. Order as many of their grilled, deep fried, sashimi, salad and rice/noodles dishes you can and share them with everyone else. Wash them down with a big glass of Asahi and I bet you'll have a great time.

A Freeman’s Bay institution! The others have said it all. Definitely work making that booking. Small, cosy, cheap, authentic.

Cheap, cheerful, tasty and fun sums up Nishiki. They serve good robata-yaki dishes (grilled and deep fried japanese tapas) as well as sushi and sashimi in a relaxed and bustling atmosphere. Great for groups although you must book well in advance as this place is always busy. They serve a good selection of Japanese beer and sake and you can BYO wine.

You have to book to get into this restaurant that seems to comfortably accommodate large groups. The menu has a wide range of Japanese food including yakitori, nigiri, katsu.. All sorts. Go along with a bottle of wine (it’s BYO) and keep ordering plates. The salmon tataki and chicken with ponzu dressing were both divine. I would not order the scallop hotpot again though… Not my thing scallops cooked to oblivion! Everything else was delicious though and finished with sesame ice cream. Yum!

This is the best Yakatori style dining in central Auckland. This is taking value, food quality, atmosphere and all around experience. There is a reason it is near impossible to get a booking on a Friday or Saturday night.
