The Old Bus Depot in central Taupo was once a hub of activity, with coaches leaving for various destinations around the North Island and many visitors arriving to explore the region. Sold by the council to pay off debt, it closed permanently on May 31st 2013.

Today the depot hosts the popular Taupo Night Market. Open Thursday evenings from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, it runs during the summer months from early November to late March. There is live entertainment along with a variety of stalls selling hot food items, fresh produce, clothing, crafts, jewellery, books and more.
