Paritutu Rock in the 'Naki is very ancient, with both it and it's neighbours, the Sugar Loaf Islands, remnants of a large volcano that was active nearly two million years ago.

It was also a lot taller but Maori painstakingly flattened it in pre-European times to make a level site for whare and kumara pits.

You can see for yourself by heading up the track on the northern side of the rock, which is a wee bit difficult but you will be well rewarded with stunning views of the entire New Plymouth coastline, city, port and of course, the Sugar Loaf Islands

Paratutu rock is one of the ‘must do’ activities when you visit Taranaki; the views from the top are just spectacular. I would only recommend this for people that don’t have a fear of heights and can climb almost vertical with a rope.. it’s not as bad as it sounds! It has the most beautiful photo opportunities, especially at sunset!
