About two Spanish car campers touring New Zealand paying nothing for accomodation and parking near toilets and sleeping in their car .Showering when they could find one . Car camping in New Zealand ,I reckon there are a very large number of people , back packers and local travellers car camping over night to save on hotel bills .  

Seeing people parked up in campervans around Wellington and people sleeping in cars is common due to the fact that many are waiting for their Inter Island Ferry connection .I usually park oveer night on the South Coast near the airport ,there is lots of parking places ,but I donot park there Friday or Saturday nights ,because of crusing kids looking for fun . There are places to park and sleep legally or more safely ,they are to be listed soon on www.park-sleep.co.nz

During the Rugby World Cup there were a lot of  campervans parked in residential streets .New Zealanders are quite tolerant really .But they do strongly object to vehicles without grey water compartments .That is they preferr campervans with toilets on board .

My advice is to ask a local , do a bit of home work .Always park where your van when you are not with it some where where it can be seen . parking out is like any where else in the world .Is it safe ? Well it always pays to have the cellphone going and lock the doors .The local emergency call is Dial 111 .

But get out there enjoy the world and be cautious when parking .Vehicles freedom camping without grey water storage , no toilet on board can suffer verbal abuse and damage to the vehicle by locals . But that is not common .
