Unlike Waiheke Island Great Barrier Island Welcomes campervans motorhomes and just plan campers there are six places you can pitch your tent or park your campervan , but please remember that getting to the Great barrier Island can be tricky costly and through dangerous seas . I say dangerous because some campervans are worth several thousand dollars and I am taking into account that the vehicle could get damaged in the crossing, the roads on the island a re rough  and myself I have got sea sick many times travelling to the Island in rough weather , yes it is great when the weather is fine .

Camp one at Whangapoua Located close to the airfield on the edge of the Whangapoua Esturary ..Standard message no dogs or pets , no loud music or any thing that will deturb the locals . Dogs are not welcome on Great Barrier Island as in most places in New Zealand as opposed to Europe where dogs play a more sociable part of life and are not seen as disease ridden etc . This site has room for 10 vehicles and dosen't have all weather access .

Camp two : Akapoua Bay : no dogs or pets , Ask a local , just ry it out , say where is the camp site west of here , check out the GPS before you leave GPS lat -36.1716822 long   175.3639353 dry weather access big vehicles may have problems getting into the site . Yes it iswest along Aotea road , Port Fitzroy a basic camp site .

Camp three :Harataonga : take the ferry from Auckland cityto Typhena or Fitzroy . Head East along Aotea Road Great Barrier Island , turn into Harataonga  Road  .The road is narrow and gravel it can be difficult when wet . Camp five : Medlands Beach : Located at South end of Medlands Beach  Oruawharo Creek Recreational Reserve . Basic camp site , no pets allowed as is standard in most New Zealand holiday camp grounds and camping grounds they just do not like pets or dogs full stop . lat-36.2695002 long 175.5038906
