10 Kilometers out of Queenstown on the way to Glenorchy Freedom camping becomes legal .There is a sign post stating this fact  .[ The Southern Lakes Freedom Camping Rule states ,10 kilometers from an urban area freedom camping is allowed unless stated other wise ]. There are many places where campervans and motorhomes with the correct certificate can park and sleep legally over night .

Watch out for signs where it clearly states no camping the signs are very clear ,make sure that you park at least 200 meters away from these signs that is the legally required distance .I think the fine of $200.00 applies if you are caught .There are some wonderful lake side places available to park and sleep over night for use of campervans and motorhomes with correct certification .

BUT :

" TWELVE MILE DELTA ",  IS A CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT MOTORHOME PARK AND CAMPERVAN PARK AVAILABLE TO ALL TENT CAMPERS CAMPERVAN CAMPERS AND MOTORHOME CAMPERS  PARKING OVER NIGHT .

This Conservation Department camping ground is just wonderful and is open to camping  all year round for only $7.00 per adult per night   . Just pay at the gate , in the winter months the guy at the gate likes to be paid by 8am in the morning as we experienced , thats cool .The camping ground is large note the large vehicle in the above photogragh , the camp ground  is on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and people using this space do not need to have the self contained certificate for which is required for freedom camping . The camp grounds are not far from Queenstown and can be used as a base for visiting Queenstown and is on route to Glenorchy some 30 Kilometers away or used on route to the tramping tracks across to the Milford Sound Road .The Dart River and other tramping tracks . The Glenorchy Hotel Store has all the information required for tramping these tracks including maps .

At Glenorchy call into the Glenorchy Hotel and get all the information needed for camping in Glenorchy from the Glenorchy Hotel .Plus you can get all the information needed for hiking the Routeburn Track etc etc .

Note : there is a gas station at Glenorky and a really good pub . Both are not open 24 hours so plan your fuel for this trip . particularly if you are going further down this route ,

MORE TO COME JUST WAIT TILL WE GET BACK TO OUR DESK .
