Point Chevalier Beach is one of the best beaches on the Waitemata harbour and certainly the best west of the city. With its safe swimming, ample shade and the excellent playground in adjacent Colye Park, it makes a great inner city outing for the family.

The beach is well sanded and offers good swimming near high tide. The best place to put down a blanket is at the southern end, where there is a flat grassy area with plenty of shade. It is quite a walk from the carpark, so it's best to park along Harbour View Rd and take one of the paths down to the beach.

I remember swimming here when I first moved back to Auckland some years ago.  It was magical at twilight floating and being able to see all the twinkling lights.  I've been a bit reluctant to swim there lately with all the water issues there have been, by maybe this Summer?  It is however a favourite spot for family picnics.  The playground is good and the view is lovely.  A bit of tranquility close to the city.

perfect for kids and picnics

Point Chev Beach is just perfect.no through traffic, not built up, and away from the road.  Walk down to the beach and you have a great walk.  My children love the place and we can spend hours just playing.  Yes my dog loves it too!  Try and work out the on or off leash times though..oh boy!

This is one of the cleanest beaches in Auckland. Great for a swim in the summer months when the water is not too cold and also for a great beach picnic. Love going down there in the summer months.

So many places to explore at Pt Chev beach, with the large grass areas you can host a party for adults or children, there is a huge playground area that has recently been renovated and is now full of new exciting challenged for a wide range of children, the metal slides are very old school and can get very hot in summer but are super fast and fun. The beach is quite long with stairs or a ramp down so you can take a buggy down to the beach and the water is flat and calm so it is great for a family day to play

On a sparkly blue Auckland day, Pt Chevalier beach is really a delight to visit during summer or winter. The park and beach offer romantic walks for those so inclined, and a great picnic spot with room to play. In the summertime, a lovely safe beach to swim in, for all members of your family weather paddlers or more serious ones. The park is well established, and although has reminders of the past, the play park has recently been redevloped and offers lots of safe fun play space for little kids, and for the bigger ones, there are big open spaces where the rugby ball can be kicked around or a game of rounders enjoyed. Only a hop, skip and a splash from the city, Pt Chevalier beach is a lovely spot for a bit of fun and suprisingly, serenity.

This is one of the best beaches you’ll find in Auckland, you’ll be able to tell when you visit from the amount of people who go there! The water is safe and clean (i assume) to swim in, there is a bbq area for those hot summer days and it’s a nice place to take the kids for a picnic. Dogs are allowed, this is a popular beach. Definately a good beach 10/0

why go to mission bay, because its beautiful

Mission bay has an awesome playground that is partly shaded, but point chevalier has those slides that heat up enough to fry an egg in summer. Whose idea was that? But otherwise, it is a good park. If you can get the big kids off the train! I love them both, for different reasons. I think the best things about mission bay is the lovely walk around the bays. Breathtaking! And Kelly tarltons! No contest really.

Ok, I'll conced that point chevalier has som very cute boutique cafes and shops along the way, and has the same sleepy art deco sea side feel that parts of devonport and belmont have, outside of traffic! Nice area. Shame that when the tide is out ot's a bit stink.

Yes its a wonderful area for families et al. Busy in summer but perfect the rest of the time.

At high tide this little beach is truly special. Safe for families and great for a sunset picnic. There is a park and children’s play ground attached - it’s family fun. If you SUP or swim this is a high tide must visit. At low tide - only good for walking the dog!
