Ponsonby Road's only old school fish 'n' chip shop left. Fush n chups (as our Aussie cousins gibe us) are still Kiwis' most popular takeaway and this little shop with it's numerous Metro readers' poll awards is a favourite.

A good selection of fresh fish is also available to cook at home or a recommended option is to choose your own piece and they can grill for you.

Should you get refused service at SPQR just stumble across the road and tuck in. They even provide a seat and table outside for you to finish your fare whilst you contemplate your next move.

Always got a great variety of fish and the best batter this side of town! :) #shoutme

Love it! After longggggg time.

This is my go to for a no frills fish burger - battered fish, iceberg lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and a sesame seed bun. Yum.

It has the awards and it has the goods, in the form of perfectly cooked fish & chips .

Ponsonby Fresh Fish & Chip Co is a Ponsonby institution and always dishes up reliably great fish and chips. However my favourite item on the menu, and best hangover food, is the classic fish burger. A piece of battered fresh fish in a sesame bun with iceberg lettuce, mayo and tomato - with a scoop of chips you have a sure fire winner.

Yet again as with Curry, I am fully qualified to offer my opinion on this dish being English. Best country in the world. Hope this doesn't get deleted.  Anyway, the fish is great, nice and fluffy batter, the chips were perfect I even had a little sausage while I was waiting. The sausage was quite authentic to one I would get in my local chippy. A little slice of Manchester in a Chinese ran chip shop in Ponsonby. Random. Prices were quite good as well. The chips were even wrapped in newspaper. Winner for me.  Keep up the great work.

just the best crunchy chips and fresh fish! highly recommend! I went here last night for the first time and ill defenetly be going back for more!!

I've had fish & chips in Ireland, England, Canada, the USA, and Australia, so forgive me if I'm very picky about me fish & chips. The fish & chips here are excellent. They are not the best I've ever had (that's reserved for a pub in London and a fish market in Wellington), but they have quickly become the standard by which I judge all other fish & chips in the Auckland area. I always order the snapper here for my fish. Good batter requires a good fish, right? Not sure why others settle for cheaper cuts, but whatever. The batter is fantastic. I don't know what their recipe is, but it produces a light, crunchy batter with the right amount of salt added at the end. Super tasty. The chips are cut properly (not those big, gummy wedges) and they are crispy. Also well salted. Both are perfect with only malt vinegar, or without any sauce at all (the true test of whether the fish & chips are any good). You pay a little extra for things like vinegar, tomato sauce, or tartar sauce, but honestly, I have eaten both their fish and chips without a single dressing. Special note: As with most fish & chips, they don't travel particularly well because they steam in their newspaper wrappers, causing the batter to lose some of its precious crunchiness. This shop has a single table on the sidewalk out front. If it's available, I strongly suggest that you eat your order as soon as you leave the shop. Enjoy!

The best fish and chips in the world - we’ve recently moved house but we still come here for our fish and chips. Still crispy and perfect even after the longer journey. We even have friends who travel from Pt Chev to get fish and chips from these guys.
