The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail project. Starting at the head of Wellington Harbour, the track takes you through the Rimutaka Mountain Range and around the southern coast.

The 115km journey takes 2-3 days to complete, with some distinctive landscapes, historic sites, picnic areas and swimming spots to enjoy en route.

One of the highlights is the Rimutaka Rail Trail section. The track was once an old railway line taking passengers between the Hutt Valley and Featherston from 1878 to 1955 and features restored bridges and tunnels.

Stretching out a bit, the border between the Wellington area and the Wairarapa has one of the best cycle ways around. Stunning views and the ability to see some ancient Maori settlements, some of our colonial history and some historical railway leftovers, it’s a great trip. With the ability to suit all levels of experience, with varying entry points and itineraries available from single day rides to multiple days, accessible via train or private shuttle to get to the start point, its something all cycle enthusiasts should do if you’re living or around Wellington for any length of time.
