Roger Hunter's Garden Centre has become a favourite destination for gardening enthusiasts looking for a bargain. Not only is it one of the best-value garden centres in Auckland, but it's also independently owned by local legend Roger, who has a passion for plants and almost 40 years experience in the industry. The garden centre is also serviced by his experienced team, who are on hand to offer helpful advice and tips.
The reason gardeners from all over the city come here is to spend an enjoyable afternoon wandering the walkways and bountiful gardens, pushing the Mangere Bridge garden centre's signature pink wheelbarrows. At Roger Hunter's Garden Centre, it's all about getting the best plants for less. There is everything from vegetable seedlings to shrubs to palms to NZ natives and fruit trees. I loved my visit to Roger's to buy sub-tropical plants for my garden. I was blown away by the low prices and the sheer scale of the place! I could only buy what I could fit in my wheelbarrow, so next time I'll bring a friend and get two barrow's full. I'll also come much earlier in the day, wow this place is busy! I can see why though, it's amazing and a lovely spot to sit in a queue to pay.
Famous for its fruity owner, hot pink ever-so-camp wheelbarrows and great prices, Roger's has become a destination garden centre for Aucklanders far and wide. Expect theatrics from Roger (whose greatest expression of endearment is to throw you a playful insult or two), an atmospheric garden centre, personalised advice and money left in your pocket. Well worth the trip Darling!
Ha. I'd read mixed reviews about this place with people saying how Roger can get a bit our of hand with the insults. You cannot take yourself too seriously if you come plant shopping here. Roger immediately addressed me as little miss perfect when I told him I'd have to check out the shape of a couple of cherry trees I was interested in.. Ahem.. Quite right.. And he mocked my urban assault vehicle - the Landrover Defender as being a bit Remuera.. Well Mt Eden if you don't mind.. VERY funny and great advice from Roger and I do love a man who gives you a bit of s&*t when you are out plant shopping. Felt like I was on a reality TV show with brilliant plants, awesome staff (who did skillfully spiral 4 large trees into the back of the landy, and great advice to boot. I told Roger I'd be back tomorrow and I will. Bought 2 meter (and nicely shaped) cherry trees for $30 rather than over $100 elsewhere. You rock Roger.
