The Ruakokoputuna Glow Worm Caves are located a little off the beaten track at 30 minutes south of Martinborough. The caves are run by Garry and Lois McAvoy whose property they are located on.
Open by appointment only, you can get up close and personal with the fascinating glow worms in an uncommercialised setting. Watch in amazement as they light up a series of large caverns.
A great adventure for families and groups, you will need at least an hour to explore. A torch and waterproof shoes or boots are recommended as you enter the caves through an unlit tunnel from a knee-deep stream.

I remember visiting the glow worms when I was a kid and finding the whole experience magical. I can't wait to bring my daughter here I'm sure she will love this adventure, I will probably enjoy it as much as her too!

If it’s a rainy day and you want an adventure, you might as well get your feet even wetter exploring the magical glow worm caves in the Ruakokoputuna Valley, just south of Martinborough. This hidden world is made up of several spectacular large caves lit up with glow worms making it exciting for the young and old. Don’t forget to bring a torch and expect to get wet feet as a stream runs through the cave system. They used to be open to the public but now you must get permission to access the caves by contacting Garry or Lois McAvoy (06 306 9797).
