South Beach is located just south of the Whanganui River behind the airport. A popular surfing spot, there are several peaks which are suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers. The beach is not patrolled, so swimming is not recommended as there are holes and rips which can be extremely dangerous at times.

Also suitable for fishing, families enjoy various beach activities during the summer, while it can be fairly empty in the colder months.

Access is via a gravel road just past the airport off Airport Road where you can walk over the dunes from the south side of the river mouth.

South beach is a great spot for surfing throughout the year. If you are a keen surfer beginner or expert level South Beach should be on your list to visit. The beach is fairly quiet most of the year and is best suited to surfing or other water sports. Grab your board and see if you can catch a wave, make sure you take your wetsuit it can get chilly!
