Taitua Arboretum (meaning 'land to the west' in Maori) offers busy city dwellers the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a tranquil setting just 5 kms from the city.
More than 1,500 species of native and exotic plants and shrubs were planted by former owners John and Bunny Mortimer and they gifted the land to Hamilton City Council in 1997.
With over 20 hectares of mature trees, fields, lakes, woodland and gardens, there are numerous scenic walkways, picnic spots and open spaces for kids to play.
Open daily from 8am till dusk, there is no charge for entry.

Love that it's so close to the end of Hamilton and a great little escape here is how we found it in detail: http://slater.co.nz/blogs/slater-chartered-accountants/44943041-walking-waikato-taitua-arboretum

Take a stroll and picnic beneath trees at the stunning Taitua Arboretum. Council owned, this spot makes for the perfect city escape. There’s nothing like fresh air and spring sunshine to calm and clear the mind. I like to wander around trying to name the trees- see how many you know or take a guidebook from the library. Perfect place for kids to burn off some steam in a beautiful setting.
