Every so often Life puts you on the path to self-discovery and life-changing experience. In my case, Life marched me through the doors of The CrossFit Power Station on Moore Street in Howick, and into the disciplining yet caring hands of Cathy Halforty. I was at a very unhappy, unhealthy, and just plain sedentary point in my life five months ago (I am writing this in July 2013). At the time, I had gained almost 20 kilos prior to meeting Cathy and joining The Power Station. My wedding day was looming and I had exactly twelve weeks to fit into my wedding dress. I was in a desperate panic and willing to do anything and everything. From the start, Cathy was extremely honest with me and made it very clear that it was not going to be easy. I was immediately put on the 'Fat Blast Challenge' - a specially designed eating program; and was given a fitness plan that made me sweat just thinking about it. Two weeks into my weight loss journey - I shed  almost 4 kilos! And I am proud to say that I did it the sensible, safe, and healthy way. Those twelve weeks were truly and utterly life changing. Looking back, not only did I manage to drop three dress sizes (I went from a size 16 back down to a size 10/12) and look better in my wedding dress than when I first bought it, I also managed to irrevocably changed my entire lifestyle and perspective on health and fitness, and become part of an amazing and dynamic community in the process. And I could not have done it without the constant support and encouragement of Cathy and my fellow Power Station CrossFitters.  What makes The CrossFit Power Station so different from other traditional gyms is that it is not a 'gym'. There are no treadmills,  no cross-trainers, no mirrors, or 'gym machines' of any kind (with the exception of rowing machines - that are used occasionally in certain work-outs). Our bodies are the machines. Cathy and Damian and their team are passionate about empowering each and every member - to utilize and develop their physical potential and capabilities; and push beyond their perceived limits. At the CrossFit Power Station, the main focus is improving and maintaining a good level of varied fitness, and strengthening and conditioning the body. As a young woman who had been on one crash diet after another since adolescence, I found it liberating and awe-inspiring to be surrounded by strong, fit, confident, and healthy women. Women who rejected the 'skinny ideal' in favor of a strong and empowered version of femininity. Since joining The CrossFit Power Station, I have gained immense respect for my body and become fitter, stronger (physically, mentally and emotionally), healthier and more social. I now have a regular, weekly training schedule that I actually look forward to, and participate in the various special events that are held for the CrossFit Power Station community. I guess you could say it's become my second home or my 'happy place'. Thank you Cathy and Damian and the Power Station Team!
