The Water Ride is a 96km section of the Hawke’s Bay Trails which is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail project, a government initiative working in collaboration with local councils and trusts to create a network of cycle trails nationwide.

The loop track starts at the Napier I-Site, taking you along the picturesque Marine Parade to Napier’s Bay View, Westshore and the seaside village of Ahuriri. There is also the option to include the Taradale loop where you can experience the Church Road and Mission Estate wineries.

Flat and easy, the track is popular with beginners and families.

With 180km of bike trails connecting our local communities and three different rides –the Landscape Ride, the Water Ride and the Wineries Ride – we are spoilt for choice in Hawke’s Bay. They’re all fantastic and easy family rides, but for historical interest and diversity you can’t beat the Water Ride circuit from Napier’s i-SITE on Marine Parade, past the Port and Ahuriri fishing village out to the Bay View coast and back inland while exploring the area which was once 7,000 acres of lagoon before being lifted during the massive 7.8 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake in 1931. It left fish floundering but gifted a growing community much-needed land. Climb Roro o Kuri, once an island on a 3800 hectare lagoon, and explore the remnants of the Otiere Pa, and venture back across wetlands and farmland and learn how the Hawke’s Bay Airport came about, then trace the old Tutaekuri riverbed, ride past Pandora Pond to Ahuriri, and back to Napier.
