Along side the Tongariro River is the Trout Center where everything you need to know about our fresh water species and also the Whio blue duck. Great educational center to stroll around at your own leisure just a short drive or a great walk or bike along the Tongariro River Trail heading just south of Turangi.

I like to keep things fun and educational and I'll probably be one of these mums that insist kids must learn something from any activity. The Tongariro National Trout Centre satisfies 100% in that respect. Kids can spend a good half day learning all about the Taupo trout fishery, ecology for freshwater fish and check out all the trout swimming past in their natural habitat. It's so awesome seeing the expressions on the kids' faces when they see a monster of a trout swim past!

A local gave me the hot tip that this is the place to go if you are in town with kids and the mountain is closed. Along with boasting one of the most extensive fishing libraries in New Zealand, it's a great place for families to go to learn all about our magical wild trout and to learn to fish. There's also an excellent indoor aquarium that isn't your normal walled-glass affair - instead it's a replica of a flowing river and gives visitors and kiwis alike a chance to learn all about our different freshwater native fish species.
