Jade (also know as pounamu or greenstone) is an ornamental rock found in the South Island which plays an important role in Maori culture. Considered a taonga (treasure), the traditional Hei-tiki pendant is a favourite with both Kiwis and visitors.
Traditional Jade is a small business run by a local family of Ngai Tahu descent. Call into the studio where you can see talented carvers at work, or check out one of the biggest raw jade collections in the country. It's a fantastic place to pick up a genuine piece of New Zealand art without the hefty price tag.
