One of Auckland's last standing independent bookstores, Unity Books have held fort on High St for over 20 years. Not only do they have a great selection of titles, they're also ninjas at hunting out those they don't already have in stock - so if you can't find something on their shelves don't be shy about asking for help tracking it down.
Probably the best store when it comes to quality reading material. Quite literally a ton of titles you will not find at your local Whitcoulls. Great range of biographies, science stuff, and an impressive philosophy section. Check out the Penguin Great Ideas range of books when you are in the store. Staff is always nice as well.
history displayed in the street , I always look at books on history , the history of the world and its inhabitants . Unity books always has books for my taste . A lttle bit of Art History ,a little bit of world history , books on the maritime world , the illustrated book , the newly illustrated edition .I sometimes or lets be honest I often go to second hand book shops but they are the history of shopping , books from another time . Previously owned . When I want to be the owner of a brand new book on subjects that I like I go to Unity Books .I purchased a pair of reading glasses at the front desk the other day , very stylish cool .I always wanted to become a professor . Good one Unity for surviving and giving a good performance in a tough environment .By the way any books on campervans or motorhomes on the selves .
Love this little place on High Street, it really is a booklovers dream. Full of interesting titles which are a little different, and cheaper than Whitcoulls too. Service is really amazing, they'll help you find what you're after or recommend good reads, and the layout is quite cute and quirky and overwhelming in a good way... it seems like organised chaos. Also has a really different range of cards which are sort of like anti-hallmark cards... very cute :)
Unity is a great bookstore, offering a wide range of titles across the entire spectrum of genres. It is definitely a bookstore to get lost in as it is piled high and not always organised in the clearest/most methodical manner! however it is a real pleasure to browse through and the staff are excellent - passionate about books and very helpful.
I'll be the first to admit that my Kindle has changed my life, but that doesn't de-value my 500-strong collection of books nor my love for something you can hold in your hands. Unity stocks exactly the kind of books you'll want to have for your library, not just for your perusal - plenty of reference books, far more than the run-of-the-mill fiction (and, if I'm not much mistaken, not one Harlequin or Stephenie Meyer in sight). And they're at surprisingly low prices, too. I picked up a mathematical enigma book for $5 just the other day. This place is potentially dangerous for bookish people's bank accounts - and yet, strangely beneficial for them, too.
