Recently re-opened in Ponsonby, Shanghai Lil’s is one of my all-time favourite places for a great cocktail. I love the opium den-feel of the interior and the fact that this is where global superstars come when they are in town in Auckland to drink. Their cocktails are second-to-none and every drink on the menu has the same opulent feel as the rest of Shanghai Lil’s regality.
I discovered Tessa from Sweet Expectations at a stall at Grey Lynn Market one Sunday morning. She is a wonderful lady who radiates kindness. She offered me a taste of her ginger and chocolate fudge which was delicious. It melted in my mouth and I wanted more! I brought some gorgeous little cookies and took some cupcakes which were beautifully decorated. She caters to people with food allergies and promised to bring some cupcakes for my 9 year son who can't eat dairy or have eggs. One of other stall holders described her as being covered in sparkles and I think that is a great description! She is a talented custom baker who makes wedding cakes too.
Pack a picnic lunch and take it to the Auckland Domain. Sit among the daffodils and enjoy the romantic, spectacular view of Auckland Harbour from the Domain. It really is one of the best places to see the city from. Enjoy a stroll around the beautiful expansive grounds or bring your bike. There’s plenty of space for walking and cycling too. Bring it on spring!
Treat yourself and your beloved to a spring getaway and re-visit the beautiful Waiheke Island. The Boatshed is five-star boutique accommodation and the whole place is decorated in understated Cape Cod, nautical elegance. You’ll be sure to relax and enjoy the beautiful meals cooked by The Boatshed’s private chef. The Boatshed has had a little break too over winter and will be opening again just in time for spring. I can highly recommend this place and couldn’t think of anywhere better to recommend for a pretty weekend away, close to Auckland.
What better way to celebrate the beginning of spring than re-visiting one of New Zealand's best galleries. The Toi Aotearoa exhibition begins on September 3 and you’ll be able to see works from artists like Ralph Hotere, Colin McCahon and Goldie. Seeing this array of incredible NZ artists all under one roof will certainly put a spring in your step!
It is a gorgeous light filled space which is a pleasure to do yoga in! The teachers are amazing and you can even get a green smoothie downstairs after your class. I'm keen to try a massage and acupuncture which they also offer. Love the fact they encompass everything under one roof to keep your health in top shape.
These guys specialise in dry wood. The prices are very reasonable and they really do have bone dry wood delivered to your door. You can only order a minimum of 2 cubic metres so a good delivery for the beginning of the winter. And Lois and Newt who own the orchard are lovely people to deal with. A great place to get a bulk delivery of wood.
I first heard about these guys from a friend who called them ‘wood aficionados’. He wasn’t wrong! These guys are wood experts and offered a great range of wood and prompt delivery for an excellent price. Although based out west they will deliver Auckland wide at no extra cost. Great guys and great wood!
I love that you buy wood direct from this sawmill in Silverdale. You can buy any amount you like which is great. I particulary like the fact I can drive away with a boot full of wood for only $40! it is mostly macrocarpa or pine and if you’re really organised you can buy it green a season early and let it age. I don’t have the space to do this but for those of you who do it’s a great way to save money on firewood.
These guys are high tech for a wood company! You can even order online. They deliver in all sizes from bags to cubic metres. You can also get coal, matches and firestarters. They have a great range of wood and proudly state they have the best firewood in Auckland!
