Cafes You Can Get A Boutique Soda At
- 133Flight Coffee HangarTe AroPoached eggs and slow cooked corn beef on a bed of soft polenta! Small, yet perfectly formed, this dish is remarkably filling, and not so remarkably given the contents, tasty as a pretty tasty thing. Once you’ve sampled their polenta delight, move onto the rest of the menu - always accompanied by strong coffee!
- 224Six Barrel Soda FactoryTe AroSix Barrel Soda Factory is another one of those spots which just always sounds nice. While the musical direction is generally (at least in my experience) indie rock or folk music, they just seem to always select the choicest records for playback. Can’t complain!
- 345Sweet Mother's KitchenTe AroCurly fries. Yes, they have curly fries - and they just might be some of the best fries ever. They also come with this amazing aioli which literally tastes different every single time you eat it. Bravo!
- 418Ti Kouka CafeWellington CentralTriple cooked hot chips. Yes, triple cooked. I have no idea how they actually do that, but yes, it tastes as good as it sounds!
- 512Thunderbird CafeWellington CentralA brother business of sorts to Sweet Mothers Kitchen (or at least it was originally, I don’t know if it still is?), Thunderbird brings the wonders of Mexican/New Orleans informed food to the Lambton Quarter. The decor is wonderful, the staff are super friendly (and have really good senses of humor), and the food…OMG Today I had Chilli Curly Fries, which is curly fries with chilli nacho beans, sour cream, gucamole and melted cheese! My sister had a beef and onion ring burger. Both dishes were A+

Get to Know Willis Street
- 130Unity Books WellingtonWellington CentralUnity Books is a truly world class bookstore. Between their amazingly curated specialist sections, the impressively well read staff, and the regularity with which they throw important local literature events in-store, it's pretty easy to fall in love with the place. Unity Book's fiction and music book sections have always been a go-to for me. I got familiar with the works of Murakami, Lauren Beukes, Paolo Bacigalupi and plenty of other crucial authors here. I look forward to discovering more on my next visit.
- 218Ti Kouka CafeWellington CentralTriple cooked hot chips. Yes, triple cooked. I have no idea how they actually do that, but yes, it tastes as good as it sounds!
- 37Butlers Chocolate CafeTe AroCoffee, Tea, Chocolate, Milkshakes, hot chocolate, baked goods and cakes, all served by friendly staff in warm environment. If you were going to die in chocolate, this would be one of the spots for it.
- 42Mulbery Garden Bar & Cafe has a good menu dishes, decent counter food, good coffee and best of all, freshly juiced vegetable juice. It might be a bit out of the way, but it’s a nice chilled out spot for refueling and conversating.
- 54Le Moulin BakeryWellington CentralThis bakery is incredible. One of the better kept (but not that well kept) secrets of the upper Willis region. Get in there early and prepare to be blown away by the freshly baked delights - savoury and sweet!

- 125Hashigo ZakeWellington CentralThis Asian themed underground craft beer bar is one of the best. A great range of beer, tasty food and a relaxed environment. Good times a plenty are to be had at Hashigo.
- 23Burger King Courtenay PlaceWellington CentralBurger King do a good burger. They also do good fries and drinks. Sure, they’re a chain, but they’re one of the better chains. Always good for a quick refuel, tasty as well.
- 328Tommy MillionsWellington CentralThe best takeaway pizza slice in town, and even when they’re bad, they’re better than anywhere else. Most times I go here I temporarily end up thinking I’m in New York, Montreal or Toronto. A+++
- 42CubitaTe AroStrong cuba coffee, tasty cuban cabinet and menu food, tables that look like chess boards and lovely staff. Sure, Mucho Mucho Cafe is off the beaten track, but it’s still a good option for cafe time.
- 58Zibibbo Restaurant & BarTe AroFor Italian and Spanish food, tapas or restaurant style, this place is the jump-off. Rustic flavours and a great wine/cocktail list. They even got this really nice twenty person private dining room for those special events. Vegetarian’s will be pleased to note they have a full vege menu on the side.

Side streets of Newtown
- 12Death Ray RecordsNewtownLocated on Wilson Street in Newtown, Death Ray Records used to be located in Berhampore and called Evil Genius. For surf, space jazz, psychobilly, garage rock and a bunch of other amazing yet niche late 20th century styles of music, this shop is remarkable. You won't experience anywhere else like this in Wellington.
- 211BebemosNewtownFries tossed with rosemary and garlic with chilli mayo… Right, let’s just take a pause and think about that sentence. Fries, tossed with rosemary and garlic, with chilli mayo. I can confirm that rosemary and garlic fries taste as good as they sound. I can also confirm that chilli mayo tastes as good as it sounds. And I can also confirm that the two combined is essentially as close as you’re gonna get to a carnival in your mouth! Tastebuds Party!!!
- 30Tucked down Wilson Street, KPC is a wonderful laundry service. You can sit in and oversee the machine washing and drying of your clothing, or leave it in the hands of some very capable staff. No stains, no shrinkage. A+
- 414Hands down the strongest coffee spot in Newtown. And sure, you can’t really go there for food, but with cups this good, just keep drinking coffee until you don’t want to eat anything anyway! Wonderful decor as well.
- 56Mediterranean Food Warehouse Lower HuttLower Hutt CentralAlcohol, beans, cheese, coffee, condiments, drinks, fruit and nuts, herbs and spices and beyond, all of the Mediterranean vein. And if you want, they have a pizzeria and cafe on site for that dine in option. A wonderful addition to Newtown.

Get To Know Mt Cook
- 14Aeroshop: Creative AlliesMt CookAeroshop is a very open eared cafe, perhaps almost too open eared. Chances are you’ll get a thorough musical education while you wait for your coffee.
- 25Mount Cook CafeMount CookThis place is deceptive. From the outside Mount Cook Cafe looks like a very average suburban cafe. Walk inside however, and you’ll find a decent spot where you can pretty much always get a table, the coffee is strong, and the menu and counter food all taste good. It might be standard cafe fair, but if you live in Mount Cook, it’s close and will do the job.
- 32Jala's StoreMount CookLocated close to Massey University, Wellington High School and some prominent bus stops, Jala is a standard for a quick snack or last minute ingredients for dinner. The staff are super friendly as well.
- 41Coffee Supreme Mt CookMount CookDid you know you can get a takeaway or sitdown coffee at the headquarters of one of the best coffee companies in the city? Well, if you didn’t, you do now. Drop past Coffee Supreme on Hopper Street between 7.30am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday. It’s a trip!
- 56Yan's SupermarketMount CookAll of the Asian food supplies at an affordable price. No seriously…All of the Asian food supplies. Very reasonably priced herbs and vegetables as well.
